“Last fall I took my kids (2 and 5 years old) to see The Legend of Sleepy Hollow performed by Puppetree . They were spell bound by the dream-like quality of the performance. They laughed at the dancing puppets and I laughed at the spinsters chasing the town fool.

I especially appreciated the history lesson about the Hudson River and peoples’ way of life back then. This type of performance would work well as an integrated lesson with art, history, and even science with the ballistics of pumpkins!

My kids were so inspired by the performance that we came home and spent hours making our own shadow puppet show for The Very Hungry Catepillar by Eric Carle. This style of theatre is truly a delight!”

-Maryann Postans , Hanover High School Biology Teacher

“PuppeTree came to our library with their production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and performed for local families. It was a wonderful experience. The members of this troupe are complete professionals, but they are also true artists who are adept at, knowledgeable of, and passionate about their craft and its vibrant history. The performance was fascinating and very enjoyable.

I highly recommend PuppeTree for any library, school or community program.”

-David DeShong , Director, Catskill Public Library

Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was the first American work of fiction that achieved acclaim in Europe. Set in New York State’s Hudson Valley 20 years after the Revolutionary War, Sleepy Hollow depicts the peaceful, bucolic life of the early Dutch settlers in that area. But, it is much more than that. Sleepy Hollow is at once a comedy and also a dark tale of what happens when obsessive greed and fear rules someone’s life as they do to the hapless “itinerant pedagogue,” Ichabod Crane.

The PuppeTree’s production of Sleepy Hollow is done with shadow puppets, and will be performed by professional puppeteers who will operate more than 100 shadow puppets designed by Artistic Director, Ann Legunn. Neal Meglathery, of the Parish Player’s and the Montshire Minute, will narrate the story in Washington Irving’s words. This is done to present the audience with the flavor of the language in that time period, as well as Washington Irving’s rich prose. At the end of the show, the performers will remove the shadow screens and demonstrate how the shadow puppets are operated, providing a “backstage” view of the production
