If you are considering starting a puppet company, this workshop looks at the first question…should you be a not-for-profit or a for profit corporation? We will cover the following topics:
•	What are the advantages and disadvantages of these business models?
•	What criteria do you use to choose one or the other for your situation and goals?
•	In the beginning…write a business plan.
•	Market research
•	What can your State Arts Council do for you?
•	How do you form a Board of Directors, and what is their role in the non-profit corporation?
•	How our non-profit company, the PuppeTree, Inc.—a 501©(3) in Vermont—got started and our experience in our first 5 years—successes and failures
•	And finally how to begin marketing your company.

This workshop includes some soul-searching written exercises to question your motives and goals, and to get you moving. We will address some of the fears that hold puppeteers back from becoming a business.

CAPS FOR SALE is a globe trotting romp for family audiences to celebrate diversity. We pulled out the stops to perform this basic folk tale with all styles of puppetry—from rod puppets to Punch and Judy and Muppet-style puppets—representing a variety of cultures. Yet, there’s always a story twist with each culture depicted. With a background of world music, the puppeteers are always in full view as they revolve on a painter’s scaffolding during the performance, sharing their puppet wizardry with the audience. This performance cost $600 this August 2010 ~ with no travel or extra fees.

The PuppeTree’s production of CAPS FOR SALE is based on Esphyr Slobodkina’s book, with permission from HarperCollins. Please to go to our website for a list of our past performances. Feel free to call any venue for a reference. This show was a huge success on the 2009 tour!

Both of our bigger shows tour from mid October till Christmas every fall ~The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with shadow puppets and Caps for Sale (with Holiday Hats in December). By the way, with all of our unique, brightly colored, articulated puppets and great background music, the shows are just plain FUN! Please give us a call or email.

The Vermont Arts Council (VAC) is offering a new, easy grant program, which will pay for the PuppeTree’s newest production 14 Carrots, plus A WORKSHOP for 20-35 of your youngest students…pre-k to 2nd grade.

There’s lots of opportunity to get involved and play along with her “hare” brained ideas. Then, everyone makes a puppet right after the show.

Please go to our website at www.vtpuppeTree.org for a peek at all out productions.

The 14 Carrots webpage and ideas to enrich the experience will be online soon.

Just in time for SPRING … the grant is on a first-come-first-served basis, so consider this show before the school year ends!
